چکیده
1 Overview Electricity generation from coal, natural gas, oil and nuclear sources involves the use of large volumes of process water. Two significant water-related issues confront the energy industry. The first involves biofouling of process surfaces and other power plant structures, leading to reduced energy efficiency and increased operational costs. A second challenge involves the accumulation of heavy metals in process and wastewaters generated by power plants, leading to significant environmental risks upon discharge. Current practices to minimize biofouling and to remediate metal-laden wastewaters from electric power generation involve relatively impractical and/or expensive technologies. In this pilot project, we took the first steps toward developing a novel coating that combines fouling resistance with the ability to sequester toxic metal ions from process and wastewater streams of power plants. The coatings are easily applied to a variety of surfaces, and are anticipated to provide a low-cost solution to fouling control and metal extraction for the energy industry.

ISEN Fall 2013 Booster Award Final
Nanomaterials such as graphene have been seen as intriguing thermoelectrics because of their low heat transfer and high mechanical strength. The objective of this ISEN Booster award is to explore thermoelectric transport in large-area single-layer molybdenum disulphide (MoS2), a twodimensional (2D) direct band gap semiconductor. The gate tunability of 2D semiconductors and the reduced thermal p...
متن کاملModeling Microbial Fuel Cells: An ISEN Supported Project
The support from ISEN provided the opportunity to bring a postdoc, Brian Merkey, to NU to join our group involved in an NSF supported grant to model microbial fuel cells. His participation was invaluable as it allowed us to accelerate our progress on the project and explore longer term goals that we otherwise could not have achieved. This report will discuss only the portion of the project to w...

BACKGROUND No study so far has evaluated the relationship between insulin secretion (ISEC) and insulin sensitivity (ISEN) in pediatric nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We evaluated the relationship between ISEC and ISEN in young obese patients with and without NAFLD. METHODS We matched 401 NAFLD+ and 595 NAFLD- children by sex (same), age (≤1 year), pubertal status (same), and body m...
